Smith & Jones community service spotlight: Ronald McDonald House
Sharon teaches her boys to give back to their local community
In our professional lives, we work with hospital systems, provider networks and alternative care channels to achieve the common goal of improving healthcare. But our dedication doesn’t stop there. Many of us also work to improve the health of our communities by volunteering our time and talents to charities and organizations close to our hearts.
One such cause is the Ronald McDonald house, which provides financial support, basic medical care and housing for families near their hospitalized child.
Recently, our Print Production Manager and Managing Partner, Sharon Lawless, took her kids to the Ronald McDonald House to help families in her community.
When they arrived, Sharon’s family had a variety of household chores to choose from, such as cleaning, vacuuming and organizing toys. Her two boys, Dylan and Ethan, chose to sort through aluminum pull tabs that the Ronald McDonald House gathers in collection boxes to raise money for the charity.
They started their day by moving 12 copy box cartons full of aluminum tabs to the basement. Then, they used a magnet to sort through the tabs to remove any waste such as nails, rocks and non-aluminum tabs, and put the good ones back into the container. Two hours later, the Lawless family had sorted through one and a half boxes of aluminum tabs.
Sharon frequently takes her kids to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house to teach them “to appreciate what they have and learn how important it is to give back to the community” — and their hard work will certainly pay off. The effort of collecting aluminum tabs equates to thousands of dollars annually for the charity. We’re proud of the Lawless gang for being a part of such an amazing cause that supports wellness and healthcare for our community.
